On Writing

For as long as I can remember, I've been a writer. As a little girl, I would craft poems about my favorite place in the world: Cape May, NJ. In middle school, I can distinctly remember carrying around a red marble notebook. I stayed after school every single day to spend an hour writing a story about a group of teenagers who stumble upon a distant land filled with mermaids and bad guys...that's all I can remember about it. I was in sixth grade and the story was terrible. But I was committed to writing it.

This blog does a pretty good job of satisfying my inherent need to write. But not all of it. I want to write, really write. One day I would love to be a published author. There's only one problem: I have no idea what I want to write about.

I decided this year I was going to bite the bullet and participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).  I don't have an outline. I have no ideas. I don't even know that I can write fiction. But I'm going to write. And if nothing miraculously comes to me I'll write what I know. I'll write about overcoming the "loss" of a parent, I'll write about surviving abuse, I'll write about being saved by Jesus, I'll write about throwing away my trust issues and falling deeply in love.

Somewhere untapped, there lies a story in that. And damnit, I'm going to find it. Wish me luck!

  1. Go get it!
    My husband self published a children's book. It's a fun experience. :)
ME? I've never been much of a writer. Funny right... since I write almost daily on my blog! But three page papers were the hardest for me because I would say everything I needed to say in two. So when I think about writing a book I figure it's not going to happen for me because I would never be able to fill enough pages. :) BUT I'm more than happy reading books that others write!

  2. I'm going for NaNoWriMo this month too! I'm like you...I've been writing for as long as I can remember, and I want to prove something to myself. Good luck! I can't wait to see how your experience goes!

  3. I feel the exact same way. I have always been a writer, and have carried a notebook or journal around with me pretty much everywhere I go. I want to be a published author. That is all I have thought about and dreamed about for as long as I can remember. But I have the same problem as you - I don't know what to write about! I just realized it was November and NaNoWriMo month, so I think I'm going to bite the bullet too, and get to writing that story I know is buried deep inside of me somewhere... Good luck!

  4. I've always felt like a writer too! I just don't have a published book. I have always loved words and writing so much. Well, that's how it starts. You just start typing. I had no clue of I could get to 50k but now I'm at 80k words on my novel. I can't do nanowrimo for it but I'm really trying to push myself this month to keep writing. Just go for it and see where it goes. Best of luck. Let's do it for ourselves if nothing else. : )

  6. Good luck! I'm excited to be following a fellow NaNo participant! I also remember writing ever since I was a child, and I also dream of being a published author, but there were a few obstacles (and people, unfortunately) who've gotten me to stop writing over the years. I finally picked it up again and just reached 13k words on my NaNo novel today. Looking forward to hearing more about your experiences!
