How to Have the Perfect Family Picnic in Cincinnati

We're big fans of the vacation day in our house. Because I work on Saturdays, Sundays are filled with Church and/or cleaning, and are hardly a day of rest. So if our family wants any quality time together, sometimes we just have to burn a vacation day and be intentional about carving out time as a foursome.

Although not on my 2017 Ohio Summer Bucket List, I've been wanting to take Charlie to Smale Riverfront Park in Cincinnati for ages. We decided it would be the perfect setting for a family picnic and made it a daytrip!

On our way, we swung by the Bellevue Kroger to pick up our picnic fixins. They recently remodeled their deli and it was the perfect option for an inexpensive picnic lunch. Chuck, Charlie and I each got The Chicken Co Meal Deal for $5. The Chicken Co chicken is fresh, hand-breaded daily and crispy. Each meal came with an entree, side and biscuit. The boys got fried chicken and macaroni and cheese and I got a chicken sandwich with veggies. Crosby of course, preferred to grab at all our meals. (If you stop by the deli, don't forget to grab a 22-oz Fountain soft drink at the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine.)

We then made our way to Smale Riverfront Park. Chuck dropped Crosby and I off so that we could get our picnic set up while he parked the car with Charlie. Little did we know that a thunderstorm was headed our way. Crosby and I had barely sat down when we started getting poured on! I threw him back into our baby carrier, grabbed our food and ran to the nearest bathroom to wait out the rain. Of course, no more than 10 minutes passed and it was a bright, beautiful and sunny day.

The four of us reunited and then headed for a dry table nearby to finish our meal and scope out the play area. The Smale Park playscape was SO much fun. With school being in session and with the rain, we had it practically to ourselves. Chuck and I acted like little kids and raced down the slides with Charlie and crawled all over the climbing area.

As we left, another storm cloud passed over us and we got rained on...again. But once everyone was relatively dry and packed up in the car, I remarked to Chuck there was no one in the world that I would rather be rained on than those three.

Our slightly soggy picnic in the park was the absolute best way to spend a Cincinnati day as a family. If you're local, you have to check out The Chicken Co Meal Deal at Kroger- they're picnic perfect! (And might I also suggest checking the weather forecast before you do?)
