I'm Back! [And a Guest Post from my MIL]

After days of whirlwind wedding fun and a week of Jamaican honeymooning in Ocho Rios, I'm finally home! Chuck and I arrived home in the wee hours of the morning and I promptly called in sick, because after a week and a half of non-stop fun, I'm exhausted! I'm so excited to share with everyone my Bachelorette Party, the night of our rehearsal, our ceremony, our reception and our honeymoon at Sandals Grande Riviera. Trust me, they're coming. Until then, I thought I'd leave you with these beautiful words from my brand spankin' new Mother in Law...

Give Me a Kiss to Build a Dream On
By Sherry Stuckert

A parent’s dream for their child begins the day they hear a heartbeat. A new life is placed in your arms, a life that you have nurtured and sustained for nine months and all the promises of God are put before your eyes.  As that child grows and develops their own personality, you see all of your hopes, fears, & dreams develop with them as they take on their own meaning and definition.

Our son, Chuck, is the reason we had five children. All of us have said that he is the “best” (how prophetic) of all seven of us because as the youngest, he learned from those who went before him.  He had lots of parents under the disguise of brothers and a sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles and close family friends who helped with his education.  One of my favorite memories of my youngest is the fact that he wanted to be married from the time he was old enough to articulate the sentence, “I can’t wait to have a wife.”

Chuck would see my husband hug me or plant a kiss on me that would leave the little guy gazing starry-eyed “I want to be ma-weed.” My sister would give him a hug when she arrived and he would say, “You smell so good! I can’t wait to have a wife!”  Like his mom (who is also the youngest in my family), Chuck was never one for a casual date….dating seemed like a waste of time when all either of us ever wanted was our one, true love. The thought of the same person for the rest of our lives was not sad or scary, it was exciting.

And then along came Kaity The Best. The night he met her was an answer to his life-long prayer. He told me the next day, “Mom, I met THE ONE.”  I had heard enough about Kaity that when I finally met her, that all I could do was agree with Chuck. They were a match…except for one small problem. Kaity could not imagine getting married or being tied down. Somehow that was not a deterrent.  Also blessed (?) with the Stubborn Deer-Stuckert genes, Chuck believed it was just a matter of time.

So now we fast-forward to September 2, 2012. The months leading up to this date were a whirlwind of exciting conversations, mom traveling down memory lane, sifting through pictures, songs, you name it. When we started listening to Mother-Son dance music, I was vetoed on several counts. “Too sappy,” “Mom – no way,” “Pa-leassse!”  What happened to my kindred spirit, Chuck? Our love for music was always something I could count on.

So, as I got out of myself and started listening to my son, Louis Armstrong kept eking his way into our conversations. One night we happened across the song, “Give Me a Kiss to Build a Dream On.”  In one of the performances, pictures were shared of a mom and her little boy.  Some of the words didn’t seem right at first, when he sang about “when I’m alone….” which is something I don’t think of when I ponder my future. However, I often “weave” my children’s romances when they are away…hoping they enjoy the type of marriage I’ve had with Loren for over 38 years. Or “give me a kiss before you leave me…” and someone one (Daughter-In-Law #1) would say, “But, Sherry, he’s not leaving you…”  Yes, he is. And rightly so and for the very best reason.  We then segued into “When You’re Smiling, The Whole World Smiles With You” which is what Chuck and I would often remind each other. It is true!

In answer to my many friends who have said, “What will you do now that the wedding is over? You’ll be bored!” I could only smile and shake my head. Boring is not something I’ve ever had to worry about with a family of twelve, now thirteen!  Within 24 hours of Chuck and Kaity’s wedding, I learned that my fourth grandchild would arrive in spring of 2013.

No, I will not be bored. And Kaity and Chuck both gave me a kiss to build a dream on September 2nd.  I have all of the same hopes they do as I move into my next chapter. My one, true love and I will savor the memories of this wedding and continue to thank God each and every day for the wonderful family we have been blessed to raise and will continue to watch as they grow.

A Kiss to Build a Dream On by Louis Armstrong

Give me a kiss to build a dream on
And my imagination will thrive upon that kiss
Sweetheart, I ask no more than this
A kiss to build a dream on

Give me a kiss before you leave me
And my imagination will feed my hungry heart
Leave me one thing before we part
A kiss to build a dream on

When I'm alone with my fancies...I'll be with you
Weaving romances...making believe they're true

Give me your lips for just a moment
And my imagination will make that moment live
Give me what you alone can give
A kiss to build a dream on
(instrumental break)
When I'm alone with my fancies...i'll be with you
Weaving romances...making believe they're true

Give me a kiss to build a dream on
And my imagination will thrive upon that kiss
Ah sweetheart, I ask no more than this
A kiss to build a dream on
